Shape 1
The lab
Design sprints, hackathons, post-its and pilots. Built for people with ideas.
Our approach
Cases sit at ‘almost decided’ for months. The team keeps working, the steering committee keeps postponing, and nobody says stop. This page shows why that happens, and which WAAI programme solves it.
New The architecture for innovation that gets decided →The story
Organisations chose the lab or the machine. One is built to generate ideas, the other to manage risk. Neither can decide about the unknown.
Shape 1
Design sprints, hackathons, post-its and pilots. Built for people with ideas.
Shape 2
Stage-gates, business cases and steering committees. Built for control.
Innovation needs a third shape: the speed of the lab, the decisiveness of the machine.
The architecture
WAAI works in three layers. Each layer tackles a different blocker, and every programme sits in one layer. Pick a layer to see which programmes belong to it.
Who decides what
Who decides, on which bets, with what budget. Without this layer every case starts from zero.
Who can do it, in-house
People and teams who can do it themselves, so the next case moves faster than the last.
The case itself
From assumption to go, pivot or stop. Experiments and prototypes, translated into the board’s language.
The offer
Pick what you recognise. On the right you see where to start.
A shared innovation mandate for your board, in three weeks.
From stalled case to go, pivot or stop.
One case, three months, a pitch that holds.
Innovated by Design, tailored to your team.
Turn your case into a business case the board can’t ignore.
Innovation that is tied to strategy.
From idea to working prototype, tested with users.
Twelve questions on Empathy, Process, Impact and Culture.
Also on request: keynotes and discovery workshops for your organisation. Ask via the contact page.

Where to start
Pick the case that has been ‘almost decided’ the longest. Ten weeks later, there is a decision.

Three days in-house, so your team shares one method and one language.
Questions
WAAI Design is the practice of Jan Van Caneghem, designer and lecturer at Artevelde University of Applied Sciences in Ghent. WAAI helps innovation managers and their sponsors move stalled innovation cases to a decision: go, pivot or stop. In weeks, not years.
Rarely because of ideas or methods. Cases stall on mandate (nobody owns the decision), evidence (assumptions are never tested) and language (the team speaks design, the board speaks business model). WAAI works on all three.
If the board is not aligned, start with the Mandate Sprint (3 weeks). If one case is stuck, the Case Sprint gets it to a decision in 10 weeks for a fixed €7,500. If you are on your own, Solo gives you three months of coaching on your case for €3,250. If your team needs a shared method, book the three-day in-company Masterclass. Not sure? Take the free EPIC scan, which takes four minutes.
The lab (design sprints, hackathons, pilots) is fast and user-centred but rarely leads to a decision. The machine (stage-gates, business cases, steering committees) decides, but only about what is already known. The third shape combines the speed of the lab with the decisiveness of the machine, through mandate, evidence and capability.
Yes. Advisory, coaching and in-company work run in Dutch or English. The Community of Practice Innovated by Design runs in Dutch in Ghent; the Community of Practice Strategic Innovation runs in English.
Next step
Thirty minutes. You bring the case, I bring the hard questions. Afterwards you know which programme fits, or that you need none.
